Unclutterer has a great series called Workspace of the Week, where various desks and other workspaces make their way onto this blog about how to simplify and organize. Â This week, they highlighted the studio of Brendan Burns, whose guitar-focused space is set up for instrument-musician-computer interaction (one would assume transcription and reading from the monitors would be a part of his routine) and his amps and accessories are neatly integrated into his station.

Having small children I have learned to practice whenever and wherever I can. This means keeping my instruments within reach often. Usually it is in the living room of our cramped downtown Houston condo next to the computer desk where I keep my metrinome and play along with various recordings etc…This also means having the ability to switch gears at a moments notice depending on what the needs of my family are. At first it was difficult for me to practice with all of the clutter and distractions, but learning how to play like this has fostered within me great discipline. Sometimes I just play out loud in front of people before church services…what the heck…people actually seem to like to listen to my practicing…Sometimes my neighbors even ask me to open the window so they can listen in when I practice at home. It adds the dimension of performance to pracicing…I saw a dude playing tenor sax outside at Herman Park the other day as I was pushing my boys along in their tandom stroller. He was practicing his chromatic scale…nothing complex…but there was something very pure and beautiful about it. I might try that some time soon.
I’ll chime in on this one. I live in a small house with my wife and three kids so space is hard to find around here. I ended up mounting my keyboard, monitor and Pod on the wall. When I want to practice, all I have to do is plug in my guitar and headphones and I’m ready to go. My workspace
