Indexed is one of my favorite daily blogs. Â Jessica’s insights are often so deceptively poignant that it may take all day for the gravity of her statements to set it.
This is today’s post. Â If you haven’t been able to tell, I’ve recently become very fascinated with the intersection of art and commerce. Â Art for Art’s sake is a beautiful, important catalyst to the creative process, but money makes the world go ’round and keeps artists’ belly’s full. Â This, of course, leads to questions of government subsidy and market value. Â One’s definition of art plays a great part in this debate. Â If art is truly unto itself, the market should not dictate its value. Â Our culture seems to be proving that the market holds little value for art (which is odd, as many of the large companies I’ve known still consider the arts as a major factor when they are planning locations).
