Thanks to Kells Nollenberger for his post on CD Baby’s guide to “Legally Sell(ing) Downloads of Cover Songs.”  I have been interested in this subject for some time as I am interested in doing a recording project in the near future and have been thinking about how to get my ducks in a row.  As I understand it, the Harry Fox Agency serves as a one-stop-shop for mechanical performance rights.  I had never heard of compulsory licenses before and feel much better about the process than before. What about you?  Please comment if you have recorded another composers’ works before and secured the rights to do so through HFA or some other means.Â
I actually ran into a snag with licensing. I tried to get the license for Herbie Hancock’s Rockit and it turns out that he only owns %17 of the license. The rest of it is held by 4 other people and thus I have to contact them via other means than Harry Fox. Pain in the but. I contacted Herbie’s publishing company and I have to send them a formal request via snail mail in order to acquire Herbie’s percentage. What say you?
If you can identify the others, you can do the same, according to the referenced sites. It needs to be certified mail; you have to be able to confirm their receipt.
Good luck!
